Custom Wrought Iron Design, Quoting & Installation

Share your ideas, objectives and specific needs with our design consultant at an on-site meeting to enable us to develop the design brief including budget, delivery time, site constraints, legal and building requirements and more.
Our heritage work design consultant usually needs to attend site and then discuss the metalwork with you. If the terrace house is heritage listed or in a heritage conservation area (HCA) the local council may need to be consulted before any changes are made to the terrace house.
Sometimes Council requires a high level of detail showing exactly what is proposed when heritage listed properties are being modified. JB Wrought Iron can create the necessary drawings Council may require.
We can ensure any original balustrades or palisade fences are replaced with high quality replica work that faithfully reproduces all the details of the original metalwork. It is important that new work is in keeping with any adjoining terrace houses, as rows of terraces often had the same design metalwork. With access to 4 supplier foundries in Australia, we can ensure any design can be matched.
Identify any other trades needed, produce a written scope of works for all involved, outlining responsibilities and scheduling.
Very often when replacing terrace house lace balustrades and decorative frieze work, other work needs to be done as part of the project. Upper-level verandah floors and support beams may need repair, modification or replacement.
We can check these items on the initial site visit and include this in any drawings we create, so other trades involved can quote on the work and Council is aware of what is proposed.
Any new balustrade and the structure it is fixed to, must meet the requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the relevant Australian Standards.
PALISADE FENCES
Replacing old palisade fences or installing new ones often does require other work to be done, including stonework, concrete footings, brickwork, minor landscaping and tessellated tiling. JB Wrought Iron can arrange the work that other trades need to do through our network of builders that are familiar with terrace house building work. Our drawings can include details and specifications for the associated work so a builder can easily quote on the whole job. With good builders always busy these days, having high quality drawings is a necessity to get their interest in the job.

Our design consultant will create concept drawings to show the design of the proposed new work.
Once the design brief and scope of work is defined with the client, the next step is to create some concept drawings for review by Council or client. These drawings show the proposed design without going into a deeper level of detail.
After approval of the concept design, we will develop detailed and specified drawings, including finishes, ornate components, and installation methods. This stage may also involve our engineer and/or other trades.
Once a concept design is approved, the concept drawings are upgraded to include all the details and specifications, so our workshop or a builder can accurately quote the proposed work. This typically includes nominating material sizes, ornate component details, methods of installing, corrosion protection and metalwork finishes. It also mentions other associated works such as tiling or stonework, nominating who does that work, to avoid misunderstandings between trades involved.
Sometimes for balustrades on upper-level verandahs, our engineer may need to specify some details about how the balustrade must be installed to be compliant with the various building codes. Balustrades must be structurally tied into the verandah timber joists under the floorboards with our slimline support stays. We never use the old style stays that merely screw fixed to the verandah decking boards. Not only are they structurally inadequate, they’re a dangerous tripping hazard.
Palisade fences need to be designed to be very strong and resist being pushed in from the street. The plinth (hob) that the fence sits on must be built on a concrete or stone footing.
This detail will be included in the drawings if applicable. We only use the traditional type stays for strength and an authentic appearance. Details of these stays are included in the drawing set. Using bulky tube posts to achieve strength instead of traditional stays detracts greatly from the appearance and we never use them.

Once specified drawings have been created, we can provide an accurate quote and CAD or shop drawings for final client approval.
Once the specified drawings are finalised, our workshop will quote on the metalwork part of the job. If a builder is involved for other work, the builder will be able to quote from the drawings we create.
Client accepts quote, pays deposit and approves final drawings before production commences, with ongoing payments scheduled to completion.

The owner of this Queens Park bungalow required a new metal palisade style fence and entry gate to replace the existing, rotting timber fencing.
The client had quite a definite style in mind to suit the property and neighbourhood, and requested some special post features. Our in-house architect drew just one concept sketch, which was approved.
Following approval of a detailed CAD drawing we also engaged a stonemason to make good the stonework after our work was installed.
